Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Delray Beach just yet. Mother Nature may have a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a repairman out out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures finally warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even greater problem too if you don’t plan for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate as it should even though snow has fallen or could fall in the upcoming days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Inspect the area routinely to ensure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have built up throughout the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner could be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Delray Beach will probably swing up and down over the last few days of winter, you can’t count out the probability of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner. At Kilbourne Heating & AC in Delray Beach, we are always available to inspect any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or purchasing a new system.
