When it’s a warm summer morning in Delray Beach, nothing could be worse than realizing your AC isn’t working the way it was built to. The last thing you need to do is schedule AC repair. But your AC is a pretty complicated system, so it can be almost impossible to find out what’s causing the issue without training.

That’s why Kilbourne Heating & AC created this handbook to help you understand what could be going on with your AC. Here, you’ll see a couple common reasons your space is feeling a little unpleasant. And though a few of these are straightforward] DIY tasks, you could have to turn to an expert for HVAC repair.

And if you do, Kilbourne Heating & AC is prepared to take care of your home. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your residence in Delray Beach.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Are Incorrect

Every person uses their thermostat a little differently to work with their specific requirements. However, a number of families make the misstep of setting their thermostat to “On” as opposed to “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your air conditioner will continue to produce an air current even when you’ve reached your desired temperature.

This can look like your AC is distributing warm air, when in reality it’s only using the fan on a more regular basis than required. Trying changing this setting and work out if things change.

2. Your Cooling System Needs Some Cleaning

There are two primary places to investigate for dirt or dust accrual when your cooling system doesn’t seem to be operating well.

Firstly, take a look at your AC system’s filter. If you don’t swap out your filter on a regular basis, built-up dust can make it more difficult for air to move through and cool down your space. If your filter is noticeably dirty or dusty, it’s definitely time to replace it. (And for best operation, you need to change it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter is looking fine, go to your outdoor unit. Double check there’s adequate space around the unit and clean up plants or dirt stuck there. This piece of your AC discharges the heat from inside your house. If the coils outside are blocked, you won’t be feeling cool inside.

We recommend booking professional air conditioner maintenance every year to keep your unit operating properly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your AC is Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the substance that conditions the air in your space. It cycles between your indoor and outdoor system pieces to soak up and release heat, to help your space remain the right temperature. If there is a leak along the way, you won’t be feeling cool again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Signs of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in conditioned air, pricier electric bills, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises coming from your AC.

If you suspect refrigerant might be leaking, call Kilbourne Heating & AC for system repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be harmful to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Should Be Replaced

Your air conditioner is made up of a couple crucial elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any one of these is failing, your home comfort suffers.

Our Kilbourne Heating & AC experts are certified and experienced in HVAC. They can help you locate and repair any issue.

5. Your System Has to Be Updated

If your equipment is more than 10 years old, it is probably time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it just won’t function as well as it did in the beginning. And it might be making your house too warm.

If your HVAC unit is more current but still isn’t keeping you cool, it could be the wrong size for your house. HVAC systems are not all the same size. A system that’s undersized simply can’t help a space the way a correctly sized air conditioner can.
